A carpentry workbench that stays put while you work

Carpentry is hard on a workbench. Planing, sawing, chiselling and assembling put sideways and downward force through the top, and a bench that racks or creeps across the floor makes accurate work almost impossible. A good carpentry bench needs a flat, solid worktop, a rigid frame, somewhere to clamp work securely and enough room to handle long boards and assembled frames.

Spaceguard carpentry benches combine a timber worktop with a fully welded steel frame. You get the traditional working surface joiners prefer, with a base that will not loosen over time the way bolted or all timber frames can. Our wooden workbenches range shows the different timber top options, and for benches built around a woodworking vice, see our woodworking benches.

These benches are used in joinery shops, shopfitting and furniture workshops, maintenance departments, college carpentry rooms and by keen home woodworkers. Everything is built to order in our Hull factory, so the length, width and height can be set around your workshop and the size of the work you do. There is no minimum order and domestic customers are welcome.

Many customers also ask for features that make everyday carpentry tasks easier, such as a lower shelf for clamps and offcuts, a drawer for marking out tools, or castors so a bench can be moved to the work on site. Tell us how you work and what you make, and we will suggest a layout and send a free 3D render so you can see the bench before it is built.

Building a better carpentry bench

Worktop

Block beech is the classic choice: dense, hard wearing and easy to flatten or refinish when it eventually shows wear. Plywood is a cost effective alternative that can be replaced when it has done its job, and MDF suits lighter assembly work. Tops can be sized to give a generous overhang for clamping.

Frame and stability

A welded steel frame resists racking under planing and sawing loads. Heavy duty frames are rated at 1000kg UDL, with extra heavy duty frames up to 5000kg for very large assemblies. A lower shelf adds rigidity and gives you somewhere to keep timber offcuts and jigs.

Height and ergonomics

Planing is easier on a slightly lower bench, while detailed joint work is more comfortable higher up. The standard 850mm height can be changed free of charge to suit you, and height adjustable frames are available for shared workshops.

Storage and tool control

Drawers keep chisels, marking tools and planes protected, while cupboards take power tools in their cases. Tool rails, pegboards and LED light rails above the bench keep frequently used tools visible and the work well lit, and sockets keep power tools ready.
